What may go inside a wall

Only parts rated for in-wall use go inside a wall. A standard power cord never does, because it is not built for it and can overheat or damage the wall. The legal way is an in-wall rated power relocation kit, which moves the outlet to the screen, or a new outlet installed by an electrician.

Fire blocks and stud bays

Horizontal blocks inside a wall (fire blocking) can stop a cable's path, and a cut to get past one is a bigger job than it looks. The installer checks the route with a small opening first. In plaster, cutting a wall open leaves a patch that rarely matches, which is one reason a raceway is often chosen in older rooms.

One kit, one existing outlet

An in-wall power kit has an inlet that plugs into the outlet already on the wall and a second outlet at the TV. It moves the plug location; it does not add a circuit. If there is no outlet at a workable distance, a new one is an electrician's job and priced separately.

An in-wall kit moves the plug, not the circuit. An in-wall rated power kit moves where the plug is: a rated cable runs inside, and nothing standard ever does.

What the numbers show

  1. Upper outlet plate The TV plugs into a recessed outlet plate right behind it.
  2. Rated cable Only a cable rated for in-wall use runs inside the wall.
  3. Lower inlet plate The inlet plate plugs into the outlet already there and does not add a circuit.
  4. Cable pass-through Signal cables pass through a brush-covered opening, in a CL3-rated lead.
  5. TV in front The TV hides the upper plate.

When the wall stays closed

In apartments, in townhome party walls and in plaster the owner wants to keep, a surface raceway is the cleaner answer. It is a slim channel fixed to the wall, painted the wall color, and it comes off later.

When the wall stays closed: a surface raceway. Where the wall cannot be opened, cords run in a slim raceway fixed to the surface and painted to match.

What the numbers show

  1. Raceway channel A slim base is fixed to the wall surface and the cords lie in it.
  2. Cables inside Signal cables and the TV's power cord end at an existing outlet; no new wiring is added.
  3. Paintable cover The cover snaps on and takes paint to match the wall.
  4. Straight run A vertical run from behind the TV to the outlet looks tidy and comes off later.

In-Wall Wire Concealment — common questions

Can the power cord run inside the wall?

No. A standard power cord never goes inside a wall; only an in-wall rated kit does.

Is a new outlet part of the mounting price?

No. A new outlet or circuit is electrical work for an electrician and is priced separately.
